What should you know about immune cell flow cytometry?

Cells are passed through a flow cytometer in a narrow stream. Different antibodies attach to selected markers, and the instrument detects the resulting signals. This creates a pattern showing the mixture of immune cells, such as lymphocyte groups, and the markers each group carries. In oncology, the pattern may help investigate unusual blood counts, immune disorders, or abnormal cells in a specimen.

A report can identify whether a population is present, absent, unusually expanded, or missing expected markers. It does not describe how you feel and does not replace the clinical assessment. The meaning depends on the sample type, the reason for testing, and other results.

Ask which sample will be collected and whether any preparation is needed. Share information about current medicines, recent infections, transfusions, or cancer treatment because these details may affect immune cell patterns. If the sample comes from a bone marrow biopsy, ask about the collection procedure separately. Request a plain-language explanation of the cell populations reported and whether another test is needed.

After a sample is taken, report persistent bleeding, increasing pain, spreading redness, drainage, or fever to your care team. Seek urgent medical help for fainting, severe shortness of breath, confusion, or uncontrolled bleeding. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the flow cytometry report is available.

Which immune cell populations were tested? What do the marker names in my report mean? Is an unusual pattern specific to one condition, or can several causes produce it? How will this result be combined with my blood count, examination, or other investigations?
