What can provide relief now?
There is no dependable home remedy that guarantees instant relief. The safest first steps are usually supportive measures that soften stool and help the bowel move without straining.
Why constipation can happen in pregnancy
Pregnancy hormones can slow the bowel, while the growing uterus can reduce space for normal bowel movement. Nausea, reduced activity, dietary changes, dehydration, iron supplements and some medicines may add to the problem.
Constipation means stools are harder, less frequent or more difficult to pass than is normal for you. Straining can cause discomfort or worsen haemorrhoids, so relief should focus on softer stools and unhurried toilet time.
Home measures to try
Sip water regularly through the day, unless your maternity team has told you to restrict fluids. Add fibre gradually from foods such as oats, wholegrain bread, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit and nuts; increasing fibre suddenly can cause bloating.
A gentle walk or other pregnancy-approved movement may stimulate bowel activity. Go to the toilet when you feel the urge, allow time without rushing, and place your feet on a low support so your knees are higher than your hips. Avoid forceful straining.
Do not start herbal products, enemas, suppositories or laxatives without checking with a pharmacist, doctor or midwife. If iron is making constipation worse, ask whether the dose, formulation or timing can be reviewed rather than stopping it yourself.
For additional guidance about bowel symptoms, see [Constipation](/symptoms/constipation/) or discuss food choices with [Nutrition Counselling](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/nutrition-counselling/).
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, fever, or blood mixed with stool. Seek urgent pregnancy care for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or reduced fetal movement.
Arrange medical advice if constipation does not improve with simple measures, keeps returning, or comes with unexplained weight loss, marked tiredness or a change in bowel habit. Dehydration can make constipation harder to manage; learn more about [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/).
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask which fibre supplement or pregnancy-compatible laxative, if any, fits your symptoms and medical history. Mention every prescription, supplement and iron product you take, how long constipation has lasted, and whether you have pain, vomiting or bleeding.
If constipation is persistent, ask whether another issue such as [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/) or [Irritable Bowel Syndrome](/conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/) should be considered. Do not use thyroid treatment or another person’s medicine for bowel relief.

Questions people ask
Can I use a laxative while pregnant?
Some laxatives may be suitable, but the right choice depends on your symptoms, stage of pregnancy and other medicines. Ask a doctor, midwife or pharmacist before taking one.
Should I stop iron tablets if they cause constipation?
No. Iron can contribute to constipation, but it supports pregnancy health for some people. Ask your maternity clinician whether the formulation, dose or schedule should be changed.
When is pregnancy constipation an emergency?
Seek urgent advice for severe or worsening pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, blood in stool, or pregnancy warning signs such as bleeding, leaking fluid, painful contractions or reduced fetal movement.
