What should you know about imiquimod suppositories?

Imiquimod works locally by stimulating immune activity in treated tissue. The formulation, site and schedule are chosen together. A cream intended for external skin should not be inserted into the vagina, rectum or another body opening unless a specialist has explicitly prescribed that route and product. An online description, a misunderstood instruction or a similarly named medicine can create confusion.

Internal discomfort, bleeding, discharge or a sore area needs its own assessment. Imiquimod should not be used to self-treat an internal symptom, and it should not be shared with another person whose diagnosis may be different.

Read the dispensing label and ask the pharmacist to show the intended route if the instructions are unclear. If you have already inserted imiquimod or applied it to an unprescribed site, do not repeat the dose; contact a pharmacist or prescriber for specific advice. Do not try to dilute it, combine it with another product or use a household applicator.

For external treatment, use clean hands and apply only the prescribed amount to the specified skin. Keep the medicine away from mucosal surfaces, eyes and mouth unless your clinician has given different, explicit instructions.

Seek prompt advice after unintended internal use, especially with severe burning, swelling, bleeding, abdominal pain or difficulty passing urine or stool. Get urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness or rapidly spreading blistering. Report pregnancy or possible pregnancy before any further application.
