What should you know about an IMDK pulse oximeter?

The device uses light passing through the finger to estimate oxygen saturation and pulse rate. It does not diagnose the cause of breathlessness, chest pain or infection, and a normal-looking number does not cancel concerning symptoms. Cold fingers, movement, nail products, poor circulation or an incorrectly fitted probe can affect a reading. Different devices may vary, so trends and the person's condition matter more than one isolated result.

Sit quietly and warm the hand if it is cold. Place the probe on a clean finger, keep the hand still and wait for the display to settle. Record the oxygen estimate, pulse and time if a clinician has asked you to monitor them. Repeat an unexpected reading after checking the fit, but do not delay care while repeatedly testing. Follow the advice given during a GP Consultation, including any personalised threshold or monitoring plan.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain or inability to speak comfortably because of breathing. Seek prompt advice if readings remain unexpectedly low for you or fall while symptoms worsen. A pulse oximeter is an aid, not a substitute for examination, especially in people with lung or heart disease.

Ask whether home monitoring is suitable, how often to measure, what result should trigger a call, and how your usual oxygen level affects interpretation. Check whether medicines, circulation problems or skin and nail products could interfere with your device.
