What should you know about images of toxic shock syndrome?

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious illness caused by toxin-producing bacteria. A rash may look diffuse, red, or sunburn-like, and later skin peeling can occur, but appearance varies and many other conditions can look similar. A photograph cannot show blood pressure, organ function, mental state, or the speed of deterioration.

Clinicians assess the whole pattern, including fever, vomiting or diarrhea, muscle aches, dizziness, confusion, breathing difficulty, kidney or liver problems, and a possible wound, vaginal infection, or retained menstrual product. Do not wait for a rash if severe illness is developing.

Seek emergency help for high fever with faintness, confusion, severe weakness, breathing trouble, widespread rash, repeated vomiting, rapidly worsening pain, or very little urine. Explain when the illness began, how quickly it changed, any possible infection or wound, menstrual product use, medicines, and recent procedures. Ask what tests are needed, whether an infection source needs treatment, and which changes require immediate return after discharge.
