What should you know about IGH white spots?

A pale area may reflect reduced pigment, irritation, inflammation after a rash, a superficial infection, or a condition affecting pigment-producing cells. Note whether the surface is smooth or scaly, whether spots are round or irregular, and whether they are spreading or itchy. A clinician may inspect the skin under magnification and examine nearby hair or nails when relevant. A white spot does not by itself identify acne, folliculitis, rosacea, or another condition.

Take clear photographs in consistent light and record new products, shaving, sun exposure, or preceding rashes. Use gentle cleansing and moisturising, avoid harsh scrubbing, and protect contrasting areas from sun. Do not use steroid, antifungal, or bleaching products without a diagnosis. Treatment depends on the cause; light-based treatment is not suitable for every pale mark.

Book a skin assessment if spots are spreading, persist, recur, become scaly, or appear with pain, marked itch, hair changes, or pigment loss elsewhere. Seek prompt care for rapidly changing areas, open skin, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, swelling, or discharge.

Ask what pattern the spots suggest, whether a bedside test is needed, which products to stop, and how long improvement should take after the cause is treated.
