What should you know about a total IgE blood test?

IgE is an antibody involved in many allergic responses. A total IgE result reflects the combined amount in the blood rather than the response to one specific food, pollen, medicine or animal. A higher result can occur with allergic conditions, some infections or other immune situations, while a result within the laboratory range does not exclude allergy. The meaning depends on symptoms, examination, medicines and other tests. It is different from a specific IgE test directed at a named allergen.

Before testing, tell the clinician why it was requested and mention itching, rashes, nasal symptoms, breathing complaints, digestive changes, fatigue or recent illness.
