If Your Urine Is Dark, What Does That Mean?

Colour matters. Deep yellow urine commonly reflects concentration after not drinking enough, sweating, exercise, or a night without fluids. Dehydration may come with thirst, dry lips, dizziness, headache, or fewer trips to the toilet. Heat exhaustion is another possibility when dark urine follows hot conditions and occurs with heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, or feeling faint.

Brown or tea-coloured urine is not the same as ordinary deep yellow urine. It can be linked with liver or bile problems, including hepatitis. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale bowel movements, itching, nausea, or abdominal discomfort makes medical review more important. Red or pink urine may contain blood, while some medicines, supplements, and foods can also change the shade.

If you otherwise feel well, drink fluids at a normal pace and observe the next few times you pass urine. Rest in a cool place after heat or strenuous activity. Think about recent changes in medicines, vitamins, foods, or fluid intake, and record any pain, fever, smell, or change in how often you urinate.

Contact a healthcare professional if the colour remains dark without a clear explanation or returns repeatedly. Do not delay care because the urine lightens if you also have blood, pain, fever, yellow eyes, or marked weakness.

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, inability to keep fluids down, or severe symptoms after heat exposure. Arrange prompt assessment for brown or tea-coloured urine, visible blood, severe side or back pain, painful urination, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or unusually pale stools. These features can signal a problem that hydration alone will not correct.
