If your pee is dark yellow, what does it mean?

Short answer

Dark yellow urine often reflects concentrated urine from not drinking enough fluid, but persistent dark urine or other symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Dark urine with pain, fever, jaundice, or blood

The short answer

Urine naturally becomes more concentrated when your body has less water available. It may look deeper yellow after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, a fever, exercise, or a long period without drinking.

What the colour can suggest

A darker yellow colour can be a simple sign that you need fluids. Some vitamins, especially certain B vitamins, can also make urine bright or deep yellow. Foods, medicines, and supplements may alter urine colour as well.

Urine that looks brown, tea-coloured, or cola-coloured is different from ordinary dark yellow urine. It can occur with dehydration, but it can also accompany blood, muscle breakdown, or a problem involving the liver or bile ducts. Hepatitis can cause dark urine along with yellowing of the skin or eyes.

What you can do now

If you otherwise feel well and can drink safely, sip water regularly and watch whether your urine becomes paler as you rehydrate. Choose extra fluids after heat exposure, exercise, or an illness that causes fluid loss.

Avoid assuming that every dark colour is dehydration. Note recent medicines, vitamins, strenuous activity, and any pain or urinary symptoms. If the colour continues despite drinking normally, arrange a medical review.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical care if dark urine occurs with very little urine, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or an inability to keep fluids down. These can be signs that fluid loss needs prompt treatment.

Get medical advice promptly for dark urine with burning when passing urine, fever, back or side pain, visible blood, pale stools, abdominal pain, or yellow skin or eyes. A clinician can check whether the cause is urinary, liver-related, or something else.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, a urine infection, or a liver problem, and whether a urine test or blood test would help. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention changes in stool colour, skin colour, fluid intake, or recent heat exposure.

Questions people ask

Can vitamins make urine dark yellow?

Yes. Some vitamin supplements can make urine noticeably yellow or bright yellow. Check the label and tell a clinician about any supplements if the change persists or you have other symptoms.

How can I tell if dark yellow urine is from dehydration?

It may follow sweating, heat, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, or reduced drinking, and may become lighter after regular fluids. Persistent dark urine or accompanying symptoms should be assessed.

Should I worry about brown urine?

Brown, tea-coloured, or cola-coloured urine deserves medical advice, especially with yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, abdominal pain, muscle pain, or visible blood.
