If you’ve had chickenpox, can you get it again?

Previous chickenpox generally leaves immune memory. A repeat infection is possible in some circumstances, including reduced immunity, but a different illness may explain a later rash. Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus and commonly produces pain or burning followed by grouped blisters in a limited band, often on one side. Fever and skin blisters can occur with chickenpox and other infections, so the appearance alone may not identify the cause.

Keep blisters clean, avoid scratching, wash hands after contact and do not share towels. Until you receive advice, avoid close contact with pregnant people, newborns and people whose immune systems are weakened. Arrange a GP consultation to confirm the diagnosis. Depending on the findings and timing, an antiviral treatment may be considered; an antihistamine treatment may be discussed for itch. Ask whether chickenpox vaccination is suitable for prevention.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, severe headache, eye involvement, repeated vomiting or rapidly worsening illness. Seek prompt clinical advice for fever with new blisters, severe pain, pregnancy, or reduced immunity, because some complications need early treatment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests chickenpox, shingles or another cause, whether testing is needed, which contacts should be avoided, and whether vaccination or antiviral treatment applies.
