Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in nerve tissue. Some people had a very mild childhood infection and do not remember it; others received a chickenpox vaccine, which uses a related weakened virus. A painful, burning or tingling strip followed by grouped blisters, usually on one side, can fit shingles. Fever or headache may occur, but symptoms vary.

Contact a GP promptly if a new one-sided painful rash or blisters appear, especially on the face or near an eye. Keep the rash clean and covered, avoid scratching, and wash hands after touching it. Until the blisters crust, avoid close contact with pregnant people without immunity, newborns and people with weakened immune systems. Antiviral treatment works best when started early; a clinician can also advise about itch relief.

Seek same-day medical advice for a rash near the eye or ear, facial weakness, severe pain, extensive blisters, fever with worsening illness or a weakened immune system. Emergency care is needed for confusion, severe headache, breathing trouble or rapidly deteriorating symptoms.
