If you cough blood what does it mean?

Blood in phlegm may appear as a pink streak, bright-red spot or darker clot after forceful coughing. Irritated airways, acute bronchitis, a common cold, asthma or bronchiectasis can be associated with this symptom. Blood from the nose, gums or throat can also mix with saliva and look as though it was coughed up.

The appearance and context matter: note whether blood is mixed with mucus, how much there is, whether it is recurring, and whether you have breathlessness, chest pain, fever or dizziness. Coughing blood is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and it should not be dismissed because a cold is also present.

Stop strenuous activity, sit upright and arrange medical advice, particularly if this is new or recurrent. Keep a note of the colour and approximate amount, and take a photo only if it can be done without delaying care. Bring a list of medicines, especially blood thinners, and mention smoking or recent travel.

Do not suppress the symptom with leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine. A clinician may examine your nose, throat and chest and decide whether further tests are needed.

Call emergency services now for more than a small streak, ongoing bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, confusion or a fast deterioration. Seek same-day assessment for repeated blood, fever, worsening cough, unexplained weight loss or blood while taking an anticoagulant.

Ask where the blood is likely coming from, whether your medicines affect bleeding, what examination or imaging is needed, and which changes should trigger emergency care. Describe the first episode, recurrence and associated symptoms precisely.
