If urine is dark yellow?

Urine may become darker after sleeping, sweating, exercising, travelling, or drinking less than usual. Heat, vomiting, and diarrhoea increase fluid loss. Some vitamins, medicines, and foods can deepen yellow shades. Dark urine with yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale stools, itching, nausea, or unusual tiredness needs a different level of attention because it may involve bile or liver function.

Burning, urgency, frequent urination, fever, or side pain points toward a urinary problem rather than colour alone. A shade cannot diagnose the cause.

If you feel well and have no fluid restriction, drink regularly and watch whether the urine becomes lighter over the next few bathroom visits. Replace fluids lost through sweating or stomach illness gradually. Check whether a new supplement or medicine coincided with the change, but do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Arrange a review if dark-yellow urine persists despite normal drinking, repeatedly returns, or comes with pain, fever, jaundice, or reduced urination.

Seek prompt care for dark urine with dizziness that does not settle, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, very little urine, fever, side pain, or yellow eyes or skin. After heat exposure, worsening weakness or altered alertness can signal heat illness and needs urgent attention.

Ask whether your fluid intake, medicines, supplements, or symptoms suggest dehydration or another cause, and whether urine or blood testing is needed. Tell the clinician about heat exposure, stomach illness, urinary symptoms, jaundice, pregnancy, and any fluid restriction.
