If urine is cloudy this indicates what?

When urine is concentrated, it may look hazy after fluid loss from heat, sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Crystals can also create a cloudy appearance. Discharge from the vagina or penis may mix with urine and change a sample. Infection becomes more likely as an explanation when there is burning, urgency, frequent small urinations, lower abdominal pain, or an unusual smell.

Kidney infection can cause fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the back or side. The appearance of urine cannot diagnose any of these conditions by itself.

Make a note of the first time you noticed the change and any symptoms that came with it. Drink normally if you are able, and avoid relying on colour alone to judge hydration. If the cloudiness continues or returns, arrange a urine assessment rather than self-treating with antibiotics.

If discharge may be present, tell the clinician, since a clean sample or separate testing may be needed.

Contact a clinician promptly for cloudy urine with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, or difficulty urinating. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or a history of urinary blockage also lowers the threshold for same-day advice. Emergency help is needed for confusion, collapse, or severe deterioration.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a bladder infection, kidney infection, dehydration, or another cause; whether urine culture is needed; and how to collect a clean sample. Mention recent medicines, antibiotics, sexual symptoms, pregnancy, stones, and fluid loss.
