Can I get pregnant if my period is irregular?

A period arrives after ovulation, so changing cycle length may mean ovulation is occurring at different times or is occasionally absent. Causes can include stress, weight change, thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome, the transition towards menopause, or premature ovarian insufficiency. Anovulation means an egg is not released during a cycle; it can reduce the chance of pregnancy in that cycle but does not prove that pregnancy cannot occur in another cycle.

If you want to conceive, record bleeding dates and signs such as cervical mucus changes, and arrange a fertility review if cycles remain unpredictable. A clinician may assess ovulation, medicines, health conditions, and both partners when appropriate. If you do not want pregnancy, use contraception every time because fertile days cannot be safely identified from calendar dates alone. A pregnancy test is reasonable after sex without contraception when a period is late or unusual.

Arrange medical advice for repeated irregular cycles, bleeding between periods, very heavy bleeding, severe pain, or a sudden change from your usual pattern. Seek prompt care if pregnancy is possible and you have one-sided pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need assessment rather than relying on cycle timing.

Ask whether your pattern suggests anovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, or another cause; whether testing for ovulation is useful; and which contraception or fertility options fit your plans.
