What to do after a dog bite if you had a rabies vaccine

The clinician needs to confirm what vaccine you received, when it was given, whether the course was completed, and whether the skin was broken. They will also consider the dog’s health, availability for observation, and local rabies guidance. A bite can damage tissue or introduce bacteria, so rabies is not the only concern. Do not wait for symptoms; once rabies symptoms appear, the illness is extremely serious.

Rinse and wash the wound thoroughly with running water and soap as soon as possible. Do not seal a deep bite yourself, apply irritating chemicals, or rely on a home remedy. Cover it with a clean dressing and attend an urgent clinic or emergency service. Bring your vaccination record if available, describe the dog and the incident, and ask whether you need Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, additional Rabies Vaccination, wound treatment, antibiotics, or tetanus protection.

Seek urgent care now for a bite to the face, hand, foot, or genitals; a deep or heavily bleeding wound; multiple bites; severe pain; loss of movement or feeling; or a bite from an unknown, stray, or unwell animal. Emergency help is needed if bleeding will not stop or you feel faint. Prompt review is still needed for a small scratch if the skin was broken.

Ask whether your earlier vaccine course changes the recommended treatment, whether the wound needs closure or antibiotics, how the dog should be reported or observed, and which signs of infection require review. Confirm every follow-up dose before leaving.
