What happens if a mosquito bites someone with dengue?

Dengue virus circulates between people and infected mosquitoes. When a mosquito bites a person during the time virus is present in their blood, the mosquito may become infected. After the virus develops inside the mosquito, a later bite can pass it to another person. Dengue does not spread through ordinary contact such as sitting near someone, sharing food or holding hands. A person with dengue should still avoid mosquito bites so the cycle is less likely to continue.

A person with suspected or confirmed dengue should use mosquito protection during illness: wear covering clothing, use an appropriate repellent and stay in a screened or netted space where possible. Remove standing water around the home, including water collected in containers or plant trays. Arrange a GP consultation for symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain or chills, and follow advice about fluids and medicines.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, easy bruising, marked weakness, difficulty breathing, confusion or unusual sleepiness. Dengue can worsen as fever settles, so improvement in temperature does not always mean the danger has passed. Prompt assessment is especially important when fluid intake is poor or a person becomes less alert.
