Identifying Insect Bites

A bite may be a small itchy papule, a larger welt, or a blister-like spot. Several lesions can occur on uncovered skin after outdoor activity, travel, contact with animals, or time in a shared sleeping space. Papular urticaria describes repeated hypersensitive reactions to bites and may continue appearing as new exposures occur. Mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, and other insects can create overlapping patterns, so avoid naming the insect from shape alone.

Rinse the skin, apply a cool compress, and keep fingernails short. Do not squeeze blisters or use irritating household chemicals. Inspect bedding, clothing, pets, and outdoor exposure when looking for a source. For troublesome itching, ask a pharmacist or clinician about Antihistamine Treatment or Topical Corticosteroids. Dark marks left after inflammation may fit Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation and can fade gradually.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt review when a bite causes increasing warmth, pain, swelling, pus, fever, or red streaking. Arrange an appointment if lesions keep returning, involve the eyes or mouth, or do not settle as expected, because infection, allergy, scabies, or another rash may need different care.
