Identifying Bed Bug Bites

Bites may become noticeable after sleeping and can affect the face, neck, arms, hands, or legs. Some people have little or no skin reaction, while others develop larger swollen patches or blisters. A line of bumps can suggest repeated feeding, yet mosquitoes, fleas, mites, and other causes can look similar. Check mattress seams, bed frames, and nearby furniture for insects, shed skins, or tiny dark marks; skin findings alone are not proof.

Wash the area gently and avoid scratching, which can break the skin and invite infection. A cool compress may ease swelling. Wash and dry bedding and clothing using the hottest setting suitable for the fabric, and arrange professional pest control if bed bugs are suspected. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread rapidly developing hives.
