Ichthyosis vulgaris treatment at home

Ichthyosis vulgaris makes the outer layer hold on to surface cells, so skin can become rough and flaky. Heat, dry air and harsh cleansing can strip away moisture and make the texture more noticeable. The aim at home is to hydrate the skin and loosen scale gradually, not to scrape it off. If the condition has not been diagnosed, persistent scaling deserves a clinical check.

Take a brief lukewarm shower, use a mild cleanser only where needed, and pat rather than rub. Within a few minutes, cover the affected areas with a thick fragrance-free cream or ointment; reapply later when dryness returns. A soft washcloth may lift loosened scale, but stop if the skin stings or becomes red. A clinician may recommend urea, lactic acid or another scale-softening product. Seek a medical review when cracks bleed, itching disrupts sleep, symptoms spread or the routine brings no relief. Prompt care is needed for pus, marked tenderness, warmth, swelling, rapidly expanding redness or fever. Avoid applying strong acids or prescription products without instructions, particularly to broken skin.
