iChoice pulse oximeter: what you should know

The device clips onto a finger and uses light to estimate oxygen saturation and pulse rate. A reading can be affected by cold hands, movement, poor circulation, nail products, bright light, or an incorrectly positioned clip. A single unexpected result may therefore need repeating under better conditions rather than being interpreted in isolation.

A reading does not explain why oxygen may be low and does not rule out serious breathing difficulty. People with chronic lung or heart conditions may have an individual target advised by their clinician. Compare readings with your usual level only when a healthcare professional has explained how to do that.

Warm your hand, sit quietly, keep the finger still, and allow the display to settle. Remove dark nail polish or artificial nails if they interfere, and try another finger if the result looks unreliable. Record the reading with the time, pulse, symptoms, activity, and any oxygen or breathing treatment being used.

Follow the device instructions and clean the clip as directed. Do not change prescribed oxygen or delay care because a number appears reassuring. Contact a clinician if readings are repeatedly unusual for you or if breathlessness is increasing.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, collapse, new confusion, inability to speak in full sentences, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not rely on the oximeter to decide whether an emergency is real; serious symptoms need urgent assessment even when the display seems normal. If you are unsure how to interpret a persistent reading, contact a GP promptly.
