What should you know about an ice burn scar?

Direct contact with ice or another very cold surface can injure skin and deeper tissue. As the area heals, it may remain darker, lighter, red, raised, indented, tight, numb, or sensitive. A scar can continue to mature and change for a long time after the wound closes.

The final appearance depends on the depth of injury, infection, wound tension, and individual healing. A scar that is painful, increasingly raised, or restricting movement needs a clinical review rather than repeated home products.

During the wound stage, protect the area, keep it clean, and follow dressing instructions. Do not peel blisters, apply extreme heat, or rub the skin.
