What should you know about a lump on your neck?

A lump may be an enlarged lymph node responding to infection, a cyst, a thyroid nodule, or another benign tissue change. Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, and Cancer of Unknown Primary can also present with a neck mass, but a lump does not establish any of these diagnoses. Location, texture, mobility, duration, and accompanying symptoms guide the assessment.

A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, skin, thyroid, and lymph-node areas. Depending on the findings, evaluation can include imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample. Note whether the lump appeared during an infection and whether it changes as the illness settles.

Arrange a medical appointment for a lump that persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or returns after seeming to settle. Record when you first noticed it, its position, changes in size, pain, recent infections, dental symptoms, smoking or alcohol exposure, and any voice or swallowing changes. Avoid repeatedly pressing it, which can make the area sore and make changes harder to judge.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or swelling with severe allergic symptoms. Seek prompt clinical review for a lump with persistent hoarseness, trouble swallowing, unexplained weight change, night sweats, fever, coughing blood, or an earache without an obvious ear problem. A lump that is painless can still need assessment if it does not resolve.

Where does the lump appear to come from? How long should it be watched, and what change would require faster review? Would imaging or a needle sample help? Could my recent infection, thyroid, teeth, throat, or medicines be relevant? What symptoms should make me seek urgent help?
