I peeled my sunburn: what should I do?

Peeling is the body's way of shedding surface cells injured by ultraviolet exposure. The exposed skin underneath may feel tender, dry, tight, or unusually sensitive. Peeling can occur with redness and, in a deeper burn, blisters. Removing flakes by hand can create tiny breaks that increase irritation and give germs an opening.

Rinse with cool or lukewarm water and pat dry. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturizer while the skin is slightly damp; an emollient can reduce friction and dryness. Do not pull at loose edges, scrub, use harsh exfoliants, or apply ice directly. Keep the area covered from direct sunlight with clothing and use sun protection on intact skin. Drink fluids if you feel dehydrated, and avoid popping any blisters.

Seek medical care for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, fever, chills, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, fainting, or trouble keeping fluids down. Get prompt advice if redness spreads, the area becomes warmer, pus appears, or pain worsens after initial improvement. A burn involving the eyes, face, hands, or genitals deserves medical assessment.
