Short answer

Recurring indigestion may be related to reflux, stomach irritation, medicines or another digestive condition, so arrange assessment when symptoms persist or change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible feelings
Burning, fullness, bloating, belching or nausea
Useful record
Meals, position, medicines and associated symptoms
Urgent signs
Blood, black stools, severe pain, fainting or chest pressure

What recurring indigestion can mean

Indigestion can feel like upper abdominal discomfort, early fullness, bloating, belching, nausea or burning after food. Acid Reflux, Gastritis, a Hiatus Hernia, a Peptic Ulcer, Gallstones or Helicobacter Pylori Infection can be associated with digestive symptoms, but the sensation alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether symptoms follow large or fatty meals, lying down, alcohol, smoking, stress, or medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers. Note pain location, vomiting, stool changes, swallowing trouble and appetite changes so a clinician can decide whether examination, testing or a medicine review is needed.

Practical steps

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, remain upright after eating, and reduce foods or drinks that clearly trigger symptoms. Avoid taking someone else’s medicine or stopping a prescribed medicine without advice. A pharmacist can explain whether Acid Reflux Medication is appropriate and how to use it safely.

When to seek care

Book a medical appointment if indigestion keeps returning, wakes you, limits eating, or is accompanied by persistent vomiting, unexplained weight change, anaemia symptoms or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, or chest pressure with sweating or breathlessness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests reflux, stomach irritation, gallbladder pain or an infection; whether any medicine may be contributing; and which tests could clarify the cause. Ask how long to try any recommended treatment and what change requires prompt review.

Questions people ask

Is recurring indigestion always acid reflux?

No. Reflux is one possibility; stomach irritation, gallbladder problems, infection, ulcer disease and medicines can also cause similar symptoms.

What should I bring to an appointment?

Bring a list of medicines and a short record of timing, meals, triggers, pain, vomiting, stool changes and swallowing symptoms.
