I have two lumps on my neck: what should I know?

Several lymph nodes can enlarge together when the throat, ears, teeth, scalp, or skin are inflamed. Lumps on both sides may follow a broader infection, while two nearby swellings may involve connected tissues. A cyst, salivary-gland problem, thyroid nodule, or muscle-related area can occur alongside a lymph node. Lymphoma and Head and Neck Cancer can present with neck masses, but two lumps do not by themselves establish cancer. Cancer of Unknown Primary is considered only in a separate setting where cancer has been identified but its starting site is unclear.

Map each lump: note side, exact position, tenderness, mobility, firmness, skin changes, and whether they appeared together. Report fever, night sweats, unexplained weight change, hoarseness, ear symptoms, or difficulty swallowing.

Avoid squeezing either lump and do not assume that matching size means matching cause. Write down when each appeared and any recent infection, dental work, injury, or new medicine. Arrange a medical examination if the lumps persist, enlarge, feel firm or fixed, or have no clear explanation. The clinician may compare both sides of the neck and examine the throat, ears, mouth, skin, and thyroid.

Get urgent help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, increases quickly, or occurs with severe illness. Seek prompt review for continued growth, hard or fixed lumps, persistent hoarseness, swallowing problems, night sweats, or unexplained weight change. A lack of pain does not settle whether assessment is needed.
