I have black spots on my body

A dark opening can be an open comedone, while a spot left after inflammation may remain darker after a pimple settles. Folliculitis can create tender or itchy bumps around hairs, and shaving can contribute to razor bumps. Acne may affect the chest, back, shoulders or face; rosacea and perioral dermatitis more often involve facial skin. A black spot that is firm, irregular or unlike nearby pimples deserves a closer look.

Note where the spots occur, whether they are raised, and whether they follow shaving, sweating, a new product or friction. Cleanse gently, avoid picking and use non-comedogenic products. Pause close shaving over irritated areas and avoid scrubbing, which can worsen inflammation and dark marks. Arrange a skin examination for a spot that changes in shape or colour, enlarges, crusts, bleeds, becomes painful or fails to settle. Seek earlier advice for widespread pus-filled bumps, rapidly worsening redness, fever or significant swelling. Urgent assessment is appropriate for a rapidly changing dark lesion or one that looks distinctly different from the others.

Ask whether the spots are open pores, inflamed follicles or leftover pigmentation, which products could worsen them, and whether a changing lesion needs examination with a magnifying device.
