I have a painful lump on my neck: what should I know?

A tender lymph node may respond to infection in the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. Muscle strain can feel sore with movement, while an inflamed skin cyst may be red or warm. Pain may also come from pressure on nearby tissue. Head and Neck Cancer or lymphoma can present with a neck mass, but a painful lump is not proof of cancer and a neck lump commonly has other explanations. Cancer of Unknown Primary is used when a cancer diagnosis exists but the original site has not been located.

Describe whether the pain is constant, triggered by touch or swallowing, or spreading toward the ear or shoulder. Fever, redness, drainage, mouth symptoms, and recent illness add useful context.

Do not puncture, squeeze, or repeatedly massage the lump. Keep a note of its size, tenderness, skin changes, and the date it began. Rest the neck if movement worsens the pain, and use only medicines that are suitable for you according to a pharmacist or clinician. Book an assessment if the lump persists, grows, becomes firm, or lacks a clear infectious cause.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain with high fever, or marked weakness. Arrange prompt review when pain continues, the lump enlarges, or you develop hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, night sweats, or unexplained weight change. Improvement in pain does not by itself confirm the cause.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests infection, muscle involvement, a lymph node, or another structure; whether examination or imaging is needed; and what change should trigger review.
