I Got Laryngitis: What Should I Know?

Laryngitis inflames the voice box, so voice rest, fluids, and attention to breathing symptoms are important. Hoarseness may follow a viral illness, heavy voice use, smoke exposure, or irritation from reflux.

Inflammation around the vocal cords can cause a Hoarse Voice, weak voice, throat clearing, dry cough, or Sore Throat. Acute laryngitis often accompanies a Common Cold and improves as the irritation settles. Repeated or prolonged hoarseness may need assessment for reflux, vocal strain, medication effects, or another voice-box problem.

Speak as little as practical and use a normal gentle voice rather than whispering, which can strain the vocal cords. Drink fluids, use humidified air, and avoid smoking, vaping, alcohol, and shouting. Do not share cups or utensils while you have a respiratory infection. A GP Consultation is useful if symptoms persist, recur, or affect work.

Get urgent help for noisy or difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, blue lips, or severe dehydration. Arrange medical review for hoarseness that does not settle, repeated episodes, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, or a neck lump.

Ask whether infection, reflux, allergies, or voice overuse is the likely trigger; whether you need an examination of the vocal cords; and which activities or medicines could delay recovery. Mention smoking or vaping and any breathing or swallowing change.
