I found a lump in my neck: what should I know?

The location matters: lumps under the jaw, along the sides of the neck, at the back of the neck, or near the thyroid can have different explanations. Recent sore throat, dental infection, ear symptoms, scalp irritation, or skin infection may cause lymph nodes to enlarge. A persistent neck mass can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, although the lump itself cannot establish any of those diagnoses.

Note its size, texture, mobility, tenderness, and whether it has changed. Also mention fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, voice change, ear pain, or difficulty swallowing.

Book a clinical appointment, especially when the lump persists, grows, feels hard, or is not tender. Write down when you noticed it and any illness, dental work, injury, or new medicine around that time. Avoid poking, squeezing, or repeatedly checking it, because local irritation can cause soreness.

A clinician may examine the neck and nearby areas, ask about symptoms, and arrange imaging or a needle sample when indicated. Ask how and when the lump should be followed if the initial examination is reassuring.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, choking, inability to swallow fluids, or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek prompt review for a fixed or enlarging lump, persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or a lump with significant fever or worsening pain. These features guide urgency; they do not prove a cancer diagnosis.

Where exactly is the lump, and what structures are nearby? What findings suggest a lymph node, cyst, thyroid swelling, or another cause? Would ultrasound, other imaging, or sampling help? What change should make me return sooner?
