Hypothyroidism and sore throat

An underactive thyroid can sometimes cause a hoarse voice, dry tissues, or a feeling of fullness in the neck. A sore, scratchy throat is more often linked with a viral illness, allergies, reflux, mouth breathing, or irritation. Hypothyroidism presents with other features such as tiredness, constipation, feeling unusually cold, or general weakness in some people; these symptoms do not prove that a sore throat is thyroid-related.

A clinician can examine the throat and neck, review thyroid symptoms, and decide whether thyroid blood tests or another assessment is suitable.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Record fever, cough, swallowing difficulty, neck swelling, and how long symptoms last. Continue prescribed thyroid treatment unless your clinician advises otherwise. Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or feel severely unwell. Prompt assessment is sensible for a persistent hoarse voice, one-sided throat pain, or difficulty opening the mouth. These signs can need examination even when the original sore throat seemed mild.
