What should you know about hypothyroidism and cracked heels treatment?

Short answer
Hypothyroidism may contribute to dry, cracked skin, but cracked heels also need local care and assessment for other causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core care
- Moisturise regularly and protect heels from friction.
- Avoid
- Cutting cracks or using sharp tools on thick skin.
The thyroid connection
An underactive thyroid can be associated with dry skin, reduced sweating, cold intolerance, constipation, tiredness, and a hoarse voice. Heel cracks may result from thick dry skin, prolonged standing, open-backed footwear, friction, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, or diabetes. The heel appearance does not establish hypothyroidism. Read about [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/).
A clinician can check whether thyroid symptoms occur alongside the heel problem and decide whether blood tests or a skin examination is appropriate. Treating a thyroid disorder may help the skin over time, but it does not remove the need to protect and moisturise the heels.
Heel care at home
Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser soon afterwards and again before bed. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend a suitable heel cream for thickened skin. Wear well-fitting closed shoes and comfortable socks, and avoid cutting the skin or using sharp tools. Keep any split clean and covered if footwear rubs it. Do not apply strong medicated products to open cracks unless advised.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if cracks are deep, painful, bleeding, recurrent, or not improving with regular care, or if you also have symptoms such as marked fatigue, cold intolerance, or generalised weakness. Seek prompt help for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or a darkening wound. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should obtain advice early.
What to ask
Ask whether the skin pattern suggests dryness, infection, eczema, or another condition; whether thyroid testing is appropriate; and which moisturiser or treatment is safe. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, numbness, medicines, and any previous thyroid results.
