What should you know about hypothyroidism and breast growth?

An underactive thyroid can affect energy, temperature tolerance, bowel movements, skin, hair, and voice. Breast enlargement, fullness, tenderness, or a lump has many possible explanations, including normal hormonal changes, medicines, cysts, infection, or other breast conditions. A breast change does not automatically indicate cancer, but it should not be dismissed as a thyroid symptom. Note whether the change is on one or both sides, whether it varies with the menstrual cycle, and whether there is pain, nipple discharge, skin change, or a lump.

Book a primary-care or breast-clinic appointment for a new, persistent, or unexplained change. Bring a list of medicines, hormonal treatments, supplements, and thyroid results. Do not alter prescribed thyroid treatment or use hormone products to treat breast growth without medical guidance. A clinician may decide whether examination, blood tests, or imaging is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical care for a new hard or persistent lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion that is new, marked redness with fever, or rapidly worsening swelling. Emergency help is appropriate for severe illness, fainting, or breathing difficulty. A breast symptom's urgency is guided by its features, not by an assumption about its cause.

Ask what may explain the change, whether your thyroid function needs checking, and whether your medicines could contribute. Ask which warning signs should trigger earlier review and whether follow-up examination or imaging is needed.
