Hypothyroidism and stomach bloating: what to know

Short answer
Hypothyroidism can slow bowel movement and contribute to bloating, but ongoing abdominal swelling may have other causes that need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- Reduced thyroid activity can slow bowel movement.

- Persistent or changing bloating deserves a clinical review.
Why bloating may occur
Lower thyroid activity can slow digestion and bowel movement. Constipation may allow stool and gas to build up, producing fullness, discomfort or visible bloating. Hypothyroidism may also occur with fatigue, cold intolerance and generalised weakness. Bloating is common in digestive conditions too, including food intolerance, reflux, irritable bowel symptoms and problems that need separate evaluation. The symptom alone cannot show that the thyroid is responsible.
Steps that can help
Arrange a routine review if bloating is persistent, recurrent or interfering with meals and daily activity. Record bowel frequency, stool changes, foods, pain and the timing of thyroid medicine. A clinician can review thyroid blood tests, medicines and constipation, then decide whether further digestive assessment is needed. Increase fluids, gentle movement and fibre gradually if these are suitable for you; a sudden large fibre increase can worsen gas.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen hard abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, or blood in the stool. Arrange prompt assessment for unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, a new abdominal lump or bloating that steadily changes. Do not attribute warning signs to thyroid disease without examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether constipation or thyroid control could explain the bloating, whether your medicines contribute, and which dietary or bowel measures are appropriate. Tell the clinician about pain, stool appearance, vomiting, bleeding and any family history of digestive disease.
