What should you know about hypothyroidism and prostate cancer?

Hypothyroidism can cause tiredness, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, low mood and slower thinking. Prostate cancer may have no early symptoms, while urinary changes, bone pain or fatigue can arise from the cancer or its treatment. These symptoms do not by themselves show that one condition caused the other. A clinician may check thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroid hormone alongside prostate cancer tests when symptoms or treatment history make this useful.

Tell the oncology and primary-care teams about thyroid diagnoses, thyroid replacement, supplements and changes in energy or bowel habits. Do not alter thyroid medicine without advice. Prostate cancer treatment is selected by stage, tumour features, symptoms and personal priorities. Options can include Prostate Removal Surgery, Radiotherapy, Brachytherapy or Targeted Radioisotope Therapy; Bone-Strengthening Therapy may be relevant when cancer affects bones. Difficulty Passing Urine needs clinical assessment rather than being attributed automatically to either condition.

Contact your care team for worsening fatigue, confusion, new swelling, palpitations, a major change in weight or difficulty taking prescribed medicines. Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, severe weakness, chest pain, breathlessness, sudden confusion or new leg weakness.

Ask whether your symptoms warrant thyroid testing, how thyroid medicine should be timed around other medicines, which prostate cancer treatments are planned, and how urinary or bone symptoms will be monitored.
