What should you know about hypothenar skin graft?

The hypothenar area is the padded side of the palm beneath the little finger. Skin from this region can tolerate friction and pressure, making it useful for selected defects that need a resilient surface. The graft has a donor site as well as a recipient site, so both areas need care. Suitability depends on the wound, blood supply, depth, movement demands, and whether nearby skin can provide a close match.

Keep dressings clean and follow the surgical team’s instructions about elevation, movement, weight bearing, and dressing changes. Do not pick at crusts or test the graft with rubbing before it has healed. Report increasing pain, drainage, odour, fever, colour change, or separation at either site. After closure, scar care and gradual rehabilitation may help comfort and function, guided by the treating team.

Contact the surgical service promptly if the graft becomes grey, very dark, unusually pale, cold, or increasingly swollen, or if a dressing becomes soaked. Urgent help is needed for uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or loss of finger movement or sensation.
