What should you know about hypoglycemia headache?

When glucose falls, the brain may not receive its usual fuel, and headache can occur alongside sweating, shaking, hunger, weakness, dizziness, irritability, or confusion. Headache also has many other possible causes, including dehydration, a common cold, allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, heat exhaustion, anxiety, dengue fever, or COVID-19. The timing matters: note whether pain starts after a missed meal, diabetes medicine, exercise, heat exposure, or a period without fluids.

If you have diabetes or a way to check glucose, follow your personal low-glucose plan rather than guessing from the headache alone. If you are alert and can swallow, use the recommended fast-acting sugar; do not drive while confused or dizzy. Rest somewhere cool, drink fluids when appropriate, and record food, medicine, activity, and associated symptoms. Recurrent headaches should be assessed even when glucose readings are normal.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, fainting, seizure, confusion, trouble speaking, severe breathlessness, stiff neck, or inability to swallow. Get prompt medical advice for headache with high fever, repeated vomiting, a rash, recent heat exposure, or symptoms that keep returning. These features can point to conditions other than hypoglycemia and need clinical assessment.
