What should you know about hypodense liver metastases?

Hypodense means an area appears darker or less dense than nearby liver tissue on a CT scan. It describes an image, rather than naming the cancer or its behaviour. The radiologist considers whether the area changes after contrast, its borders and distribution, and findings in other organs. Liver Metastases can come from several primary cancers, including Bowel Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer, so the scan pattern is not enough to identify the source.

Your clinicians may compare previous images, request a different liver scan, check blood tests and review any known cancer history. A biopsy is considered when tissue would change the diagnosis or treatment. Management is individual: Chemotherapy may treat cancer throughout the body, while Liver Resection or Tumour Ablation may be considered for selected liver lesions. The plan also accounts for liver function, location and disease beyond the liver.

Tell your care team about increasing abdominal discomfort, swelling, reduced appetite, repeated vomiting, fever, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual drowsiness. Get urgent medical help for severe pain, confusion, collapse, bleeding or inability to drink.

Ask what makes the lesions look hypodense, whether contrast imaging or biopsy is needed, what the likely primary source is, and whether treatment aims to control liver disease, cancer elsewhere, symptoms, or several of these.
