Hypertrophic scars: natural treatment and care

A hypertrophic scar is a firm, thickened area of healing skin that stays within the original wound or incision. It can feel itchy, tender, tight, or sensitive to rubbing. Its colour may remain darker, redder, or lighter than nearby skin as it matures.

Keep the area clean, moisturised, and protected from friction once the wound has closed. Do not pick, scratch, or apply harsh household substances; these can inflame fragile skin. Sun protection helps limit lingering colour change. If the scar remains raised or troublesome, a dermatologist may discuss steroid injection into the skin, fractional laser treatment, or scar revision surgery. Excision alone can sometimes be followed by another raised scar, so the plan should include prevention and follow-up.

Arrange an assessment if the scar is rapidly enlarging, increasingly painful, warm, draining, opening, or bleeding. Seek prompt care for fever or spreading redness. A review is also useful when itching restricts sleep, movement, or clothing choices, or when you are unsure whether a changing lump is scar tissue.
