Laser treatment for hypertrophic scars

A hypertrophic scar is raised healing tissue that remains within the original wound. Different lasers target different features: fractional devices create controlled microscopic treatment zones to influence texture, while other settings may address redness or visible blood vessels. Laser does not erase the wound history, and a raised scar can remain active even after its surface looks calmer. Skin tone, scar age, thickness, location and a tendency to darken after inflammation all affect planning.

During consultation, disclose medicines, active skin conditions, recent tanning and any previous scar treatments. A treatment plan may use several appointments with healing time between them. Follow instructions about gentle cleansing, moisturising and sun protection; do not scratch peeling skin. Mild redness, warmth, swelling or sensitivity can occur after treatment. Contact the treating service if pain is worsening, blisters develop, the area becomes increasingly hot, redness spreads, or drainage and fever appear. Seek urgent help for facial swelling that affects breathing. A review is also needed if the scar starts becoming thicker again.

Ask which scar feature the laser is intended to change, why that device and setting fit your skin, and whether another treatment should come first. Discuss downtime, pigment changes, wound care, signs of infection and how progress will be judged over follow-up visits.
