Hypertrophic Scar from a Pimple

Acne inflammation can injure the deeper skin and stimulate extra collagen during repair. A hypertrophic scar may feel firm, itch, or remain pink, brown, or darker than surrounding skin. It is different from a soft, active pimple, a blocked pore, or an indented acne scar. A keloid can extend beyond the original blemish, while a hypertrophic scar stays within it. Avoid squeezing new pimples and protect a healing spot from rubbing and picking. Ongoing acne should be controlled so fresh inflammation does not create additional scars. The best sequence depends on whether the acne is still active and whether the mark is mainly raised, coloured, itchy, or tight.

Book a review if the mark keeps enlarging after the pimple has cleared, becomes painful or very itchy, or affects movement or clothing. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, rapid swelling, or an open sore. A new or changing bump that does not clearly follow acne should be checked rather than treated at home.
