What should you know about hypertrophic belly button scar?

After piercing, surgery, or another injury near the navel, healing tissue can become thick, firm, itchy, tender, or darker than nearby skin. A hypertrophic scar stays within the boundary of the original wound; a keloid extends beyond it. Scars can remain active and change in colour or thickness while they mature. A clinician may inspect the site to distinguish scar tissue from infection, a retained foreign body, or another lump.

Avoid picking, repeated rubbing, and unplanned piercing through the raised area. Keep the skin clean and use only products suitable for a healed wound. If the scar is itchy, painful, enlarging, or catching on clothing, a dermatologist may discuss steroid injection into the skin, fractional laser treatment, or surgery. Excision can create a new wound and does not remove the possibility of another raised scar, so the plan should include prevention and follow-up.

Seek medical review for increasing warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, sudden bleeding, or a rapidly enlarging lump. These signs may indicate infection or another problem rather than ordinary scar maturation. Arrange routine assessment if the scar restricts movement, causes persistent pain, or repeatedly breaks down.

Ask whether the growth is hypertrophic or keloid scar, whether the wound is fully healed, which treatment matches its thickness and symptoms, and how recurrence or wound irritation will be monitored.
