Hyperthyroidism and shortness of breath: what to know

The timing and pattern provide useful clues. Wheeze or chest tightness can occur with asthma or COPD; cough and fever may accompany acute bronchitis; fatigue and pale skin can occur with anaemia. Chest pressure with exertion may indicate angina, while a racing irregular heartbeat can occur with atrial fibrillation. Sudden breathlessness with swelling, rash, or throat tightness can signal an emergency such as anaphylaxis.

A clinician may check oxygen level, breathing, pulse, heart rhythm, and blood tests. Further tests depend on the findings and how quickly the symptom began.

Stop strenuous activity and sit upright while arranging medical advice. Note whether symptoms began suddenly, occur at rest or with exertion, and come with cough, fever, chest discomfort, wheeze, palpitations, or leg swelling. Use only prescribed inhalers or heart medicines as directed; do not borrow someone else’s treatment.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak normally, chest pain, fainting, confusion, throat or tongue swelling, or sudden breathlessness with a fast irregular heartbeat. Same-day medical review is appropriate for new or persistent breathlessness even when it feels mild.
