Who should know about hypertension?

Hypertension is blood pressure that stays higher than the healthy range over time. A single raised reading does not establish the diagnosis; clinicians may repeat measurements in the clinic or ask you to record readings at home. Age, family history, excess body weight, kidney disease, sleep apnoea, medicines and lifestyle factors can all influence risk. Untreated high pressure can strain blood vessels and organs, including the heart, brain and kidneys. It may contribute to conditions such as angina, heart failure, stroke or chronic kidney disease.

Arrange a blood pressure assessment if you have not had one recently, especially if a screening reading was high or a clinician has advised follow-up. Take prescribed medicine consistently and do not stop it because you feel well. Helpful habits include reducing salty processed foods, being physically active as appropriate, avoiding tobacco, moderating alcohol and working towards a healthy weight. Bring home readings and a list of medicines to your appointment; this helps the clinician see patterns and check for interactions.

Seek urgent medical help for very high blood pressure accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms can signal an emergency rather than ordinary hypertension. If readings remain raised without these warning signs, contact a clinician soon for confirmation and a management plan.
