What should you know about hypertension treatment at home?

Home routines can show how blood pressure behaves outside a clinic and help you notice missed doses or side effects. They cannot identify every cause of a high reading, and one result is not a diagnosis. Stress, pain, caffeine, activity and a poor cuff fit can alter a measurement.

Use the monitor and schedule recommended by your clinician. Rest quietly, support your arm, keep a record and bring it to review. Take medicines as directed; never borrow remedies or change a dose because of one reading. Reduce salty packaged foods, avoid tobacco, stay active as able and protect sleep. Ask for advice during vomiting, diarrhoea or poor fluid intake because illness can change medicine safety.

Contact your clinician for repeated readings above your agreed range or troublesome dizziness, swelling, faintness or breathlessness. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, confusion, trouble speaking or vision loss.
