What should you know about hypertension after pregnancy?

High blood pressure may persist from pregnancy or appear after delivery, including during the weeks when attention is focused on recovery and the baby. Some people feel well even when readings are high. Others develop headache, vision changes, swelling, breathlessness or pain beneath the ribs. Clinicians may review urine protein, blood tests, medicines and symptoms to assess for post-pregnancy complications. Ongoing hypertension can also affect the heart, blood vessels and kidneys over time.

Measure blood pressure as instructed and record the reading, time and symptoms. Attend postnatal and primary-care reviews, take prescribed medicine as directed, and ask whether it is compatible with breastfeeding. Do not stop treatment because a single reading improves. Rest when possible, limit excess salt, and discuss gradual activity and weight changes with your clinician. Longer-term review may include cardiovascular and kidney risk checks.

Seek urgent care for a severe or persistent headache, new visual disturbance, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, confusion, weakness on one side, or pain beneath the ribs. These symptoms can signal a serious blood-pressure complication, stroke, heart problem or kidney involvement. Contact your maternity or medical team promptly if readings remain high or symptoms are new.

Ask how often to check your pressure, what reading or symptom needs urgent help, how long treatment may continue, and which medicines are suitable while breastfeeding. Ask when kidney tests and a long-term cardiovascular review should be arranged.
