What should you know about hyperpigmentation knees and elbows?

Short answer

Hyperpigmentation on knees and elbows often follows friction, pressure, dryness, or inflammation in thickened skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why these areas look darker

Knees and elbows naturally have thicker, drier skin and experience repeated bending, leaning, and contact with clothing or surfaces. Persistent rubbing can make the surface rough and stimulate pigment after minor inflammation. Previous eczema, a healed scrape, or frequent kneeling may leave a darker patch. Colour can vary from tan to brown or grey-brown. A photograph cannot reliably identify the cause, especially when the skin is also scaly, itchy, or thickened.

A practical routine

Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. A product with urea or lactic acid may soften roughness; introduce one active product at a time and stop if it stings persistently. Limit leaning directly on elbows and use cushioning when kneeling. Protect exposed skin from sunlight, since ultraviolet exposure can maintain uneven colour. A dermatologist may consider a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or topical prescription after examining the patch.

Signs that need review

Book an assessment if the patch appears suddenly, spreads, becomes markedly thick or velvety, or occurs with itching, pain, scaling, bleeding, or a non-healing sore. Also seek advice when similar darkening develops in several folds or when moisturising and friction reduction do not help. The clinician can check for dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, or other causes of pigmentation.

Useful questions

Ask what is causing the colour change, whether roughness needs separate treatment, which moisturiser or active ingredient is suitable, and how long to try it. Tell the clinician about new medicines, skin products, occupational kneeling, eczema, and any change elsewhere on the body.

Questions people ask

Does scrubbing remove the darkness?

Hard scrubbing can worsen irritation and pigment. Softening the skin and reducing friction is usually kinder.

Can sunlight affect these patches?

Yes. Sun exposure can make existing uneven colour more noticeable, so exposed areas benefit from sunscreen.
