Could Hyperpigmentation Around the Eyes Be Melasma?

Short answer
Hyperpigmentation around the eyes may be melasma, but similar darkening can follow irritation, rubbing, sun exposure, or other skin conditions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible pattern
- Flat, facial, and often balanced in distribution
- Sensitive area
- Eyelid skin needs extra caution
- Helpful habit
- Avoid rubbing and protect from light
How melasma can look
Melasma is often a flat, brown or grey-brown change that appears in facial areas exposed to light. Around the eyes, it may affect the upper cheeks, temples, forehead, or eyelids and can look fairly balanced from one side to the other. Light, heat, hormonal changes, and irritation may make it more noticeable.
This appearance is not enough to confirm melasma. Dark circles from visible blood vessels, shadows, eczema, contact irritation, and rubbing can look similar. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, hormonal medicines, new eye products, allergies, itching, and the date the colour change began.
Protect the eye area
Use a gentle cleanser and bland moisturiser, avoid rubbing, and keep fragranced or stinging products away from the eyelids. Use sun protection suitable for the area and add sunglasses or a hat. Do not place prescription lightening products, acids, or home remedies close to the eyes unless specifically instructed.
A dermatologist may recommend a tailored topical plan or discuss [Skin Brightening Treatment](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/skin-brightening-treatment/), [Chemical Peel](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/chemical-peel/), or [Picosecond Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/picosecond-laser-treatment/). The thin eyelid skin changes the safety calculation, so treatment should be individualised.
When medical review matters
Arrange review for persistent or worsening pigmentation, especially when it is one-sided, itchy, scaly, swollen, or linked to a new product. Seek urgent care for eye pain, marked swelling, discharge, vision change, or a rapidly changing lesion. These features are not typical cosmetic concerns.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the distribution supports melasma, what should be stopped around the eyes, and which sunscreen and treatment are appropriate for eyelid skin. You can also ask whether [Dark Patches On Skin](/symptoms/dark-patches-on-skin/) information or [IPL Photofacial](/treatments/laser-and-energy/ipl-photofacial/) is relevant to your diagnosis.

Questions people ask
Does darkening around both eyes confirm melasma?
No. Symmetry can be a clue, but irritation, shadows, vascular colour, and other conditions may look similar.
Can I use my facial brightening cream on my eyelids?
Only if a clinician specifically confirms it is suitable for that area; eyelid skin is easily irritated.
