What should you know about hypermobility and clicking joints?

Short answer

Clicking joints can occur with hypermobility when tendons or joint surfaces move during motion, but pain, swelling, or instability deserves assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

A click may reflect
Tendon movement, joint-fluid pressure change, or shifting joint surfaces
More meaningful than sound
Pain, swelling, locking, or giving way
Helpful approach
Comfortable movement and gradual control training

Why flexible joints may click

A click may come from a tendon moving over a bony prominence, pressure changes within joint fluid, or joint surfaces moving as the limb changes position. In a hypermobile joint, the movement may be easier to see or feel because passive support is less firm. A painless click that has been present for a long time is often less concerning than a new click after an injury.

Pay attention to what accompanies the sound. Joint pain can signal irritated tissues, while swelling, warmth, locking, or a sense that the joint slips suggests a need for clinical review. The sound alone cannot establish the cause.

How to manage it

Do not repeatedly force a joint to click, especially if doing so causes soreness. Use comfortable ranges, change position during repetitive tasks, and build control around the joint with a gradual programme. Physiotherapy can assess alignment, movement habits, balance, and muscle endurance. Strength Training Rehabilitation may be used to improve control without chasing extreme flexibility.

Keep a brief record of the joint involved, the movement that produces the click, and whether pain or swelling follows. That information is more useful than the sound by itself.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care if clicking starts after a fall or twist, or if the joint becomes hot, swollen, visibly deformed, locked, or difficult to move. Arrange an assessment for repeated giving way, increasing pain, or loss of function. Urgent evaluation is appropriate when an injury is accompanied by numbness, a pale or blue limb, or inability to bear weight or use the joint.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the click appears mechanical or reflects irritated tissue, whether you need imaging, which positions to avoid temporarily, and how to progress stability exercises. Mention any history of dislocations, morning stiffness, swelling, or pain in other joints.

Questions people ask

Are clicking joints always harmful in hypermobility?

No. A painless, longstanding click may be harmless, but new or painful clicking needs context and sometimes examination.

Can strengthening reduce clicking?

It may improve control and reduce irritating movement patterns, although it may not remove every sound.
