What should you know about hyper sensitive skin?

Short answer
Highly sensitive skin reacts with stinging, burning, redness or itching when its protective barrier is irritated.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common sensations
- Stinging, burning, itch or flush
- Frequent triggers
- Products, heat, wind and friction
- Basic support
- Gentle cleansing and moisturising
What sensitivity may signal
Sensitivity is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. Dryness, over-exfoliation, contact allergy, heat, wind and friction can all make skin reactive. Repeated flushing may occur with Rosacea; a rash around the mouth may fit Perioral Dermatitis; itch and eczema-like patches may occur with Atopic Dermatitis. The timing of symptoms after a product, and whether there is a visible rash, help narrow the possibilities.
Calm the skin barrier
Pause scrubs, acids, retinoids, fragrance and newly added products while the skin is irritated. Wash with lukewarm water, use a gentle cleanser only when needed, and apply a plain moisturiser soon after drying. Introduce one product at a time and patch-test it on a small area. Choose shade, heat and friction protection outdoors. A clinician can guide treatment when a rash keeps returning or a trigger is unclear.
When symptoms need medical help
Arrange care for persistent redness, scaling, cracking, swelling, recurrent flushing or itch that disrupts sleep. Seek urgent help for sudden facial swelling, widespread hives, blistering, or trouble breathing. Review is also sensible when sensitivity begins after a medicine or cosmetic procedure, or when broken skin develops discharge or increasing pain.
Questions to bring
Ask whether your symptoms suggest allergy, eczema, rosacea or another condition; which ingredients to avoid; how to rebuild the barrier; and when to restart active products. Ask whether testing or prescription treatment is appropriate for the pattern you describe.

Questions people ask
Does sensitive skin mean an allergy?
Not necessarily. Irritation and barrier disruption can cause similar sensations without a true allergy.
What should be stopped during a flare?
Pause fragranced or exfoliating products and any recently added product that stings until the skin settles.
